How To Use Minoxidil

Minoxidil Spray

Every treatment comes with its own specific set of instructions. It is important and in the best interest of the user to read those instructions before testing a product for the first time. If someone is not familiar with medical terminology or not likely to read long paragraphs, it is best to visit a medical professional and ask him/her to advise on how to use the treatment first.

Originally, Minoxidil was available in pill form for the treatment of high blood pressure. Doctors noticed that patients started growing hair all over their body. When this surprising discovery was uncovered, dermatologists started using Minoxidil for the treatment of hair loss instead of hypertension.

Minoxidil, although is a non-prescribed medicine, is best used under the advice of a trained medical professional. Under the proper supervision, it can be absorbed more effectively without any kind of side effects.

A dermatologist will also advise which kind of Minoxidil will be best for you and with which pace and speed you should use it, after examining your scalp.

Precautions

It is also advised that you do not apply Minoxidil on other parts of the body without the instruction of a doctor. By applying Minoxidil on the body it may affect your heart and blood vessels and cause unwanted results.

Minoxidil should only be used in recommended doses, as per instructions; do not use other skin care products at the same time when Minoxidil is used. That said, hair color and hair relaxers can be used along with Minoxidil, as long as the scalp is washed and cleaned before your treatment.

A proper Minoxidil dose should be used once a day, do not try to take more than one dose if it’s not prescribed. NEVER double your dose to make up for any missed ones.

How to Apply

  1. Solution
  • Before applying a Minoxidil solution, make sure that the scalp is completely clean and dry.
  • Apply the medication to the affected area of the scalp, and be sure not to apply more than the amount of medication advised by a doctor or in the instructions provided.
  • Try not to wash your hair after applying the medication for at least 4 hours.
  • After using Minoxidil, immediately wash your hands to remove any solution that may be left over.
  • Try not to use a hairdryer after the use of Minoxidil to dry the solution. This may make the treatment less effective.
  • Give Minoxidil some time to dry properly, especially before going into the bed. Be advised, Minoxidil solution can stain clothes, hats or bed sheets.
  • Be careful while applying Minoxidil solution while other parts of the body are wet.

When using Minoxidil solution, be very very careful. Do not apply it in a hurry. One of the main disadvantages of using Minoxidil, especially for women, is that it dribbles down the face, which can result in extra, unnecessary hair on the face.

  1. Foam
  • Before applying Minoxidil foam on the head, try to seperate your hair strands or make one or more rows to make thin hair visible on the scalp.
  • Put the foam in the bottle cap up to the 1mL mark by pressing the nozzle.
  • Take some of the foam out using your fingers.
  • Put the foam over the affected area(s) with the help of your fingertips.
  • After applying, massage the foam gently into the scalp.
  • Wash your hands so that the medicine is removed and does not cause any harm to the other parts of the body through accidental contact.

This form of Minoxidil was approved in 2006 by the FDA of the United States. It is safest to use, extremely helpful to women because it doesn’t dribble down.

  1. Spray
  • Before applying Minoxidil spray, keep that in mind that a single spray contains almost 0.2 mL. If you are advised to take one ML, you can only spray up to 5 times.
  • Separate your hair or make rows of hairs to make the targeted area clear to see.
  • Most of the time it is suggested to spray on the crown area, mid-scalp of the right side, mid-scalp of the left side, right front and left front (close to the hairline).
  • After spraying, rub it into the skin of the scalp and you are all done.
  • Immediately wash your hands after applying.

Just a quick note, it would be best to visit a doctor before applying Minoxidil medication on sunburned or irritated scalps.

Applying Minoxidil is quite a serious business. Minoxidil in solution, foam, and spray form are only used on the scalp. It will not affect  the hair until the Minoxidil touches the skin. Keep it away from the mouth, eyes, nose, and ears.

If any of the Minoxidil accidentally gets in eyes, nose, mouth, and ears wash the targeted area by cold tap water as soon as possible.

If you are using the spray, be careful while breathing. Do not breath in the spray.

General Instruction

Generally, it depends upon the patient. Generally, for women, there is a 2% concentration of Minoxidil, and for men, there is a 5% concentration of Minoxidil. Minoxidil is used two times a day which make one dose.

In the recent past, women are also suggested to use 5% concentration of Minoxidil but once a day. It makes their one dose. Women’s skin is more sensitive than men. If they use the same dose as men do, it can cause a serious problem for them. Follow the instructions whether they are available with the product or online.

The medication course depends upon a number of facts, such as

  • Time: For how much time the patient will take the medicine.
  • Quantity: How much patient will take medicine.
  • Strength: Of which strength the patient will take medicine.

The general dose of taking Minoxidil of 5% concentration is as follow
